Scotland Travel | Super Detailed Packing Checklist (Summer Edition)
Scotland Travel | Super Detailed Packing Checklist (Summer Edition)
Many people assume Scotland is warm in summer, but the weather here can actually experience all four seasons in a single day. Even from June to August, temperatures typically only reach 10°C-20°C, with significant temperature differences between day and night. The Highlands and the Isle of Skye frequently experience strong winds, rain, and dense fog. Therefore, the most important principle for traveling to Scotland is: layer your clothes!
👕 Clothing Recommendations
Tops
✅ Short-sleeved T-shirts (3-5 pieces): Mainly for indoor wear or sunny days.
✅ Long-sleeved base layers (2-3 pieces)
✅ Thin sweatshirts or knitwear (1-2 pieces)
✅ Fleece jacket (1 piece)
✅ Windproof and waterproof hardshell jacket (1 piece): A must-have! And it must be a windproof and waterproof hardshell jacket, not a regular windbreaker. This is your "lifesaver" in Scotland.
The winds are very strong in the Highlands, the Isle of Skye, and near Loch Ness, so a windproof and rainproof jacket is more practical than a thick down jacket.
Pants
✅ 2-3 pairs of long pants
✅ Lightweight athletic pants or outdoor pants: Windproof and waterproof pants are very practical. Jeans are okay, but they will be very cold and won't dry if wet.
❌ Not recommended to bring only shorts.
Even in summer, the perceived temperature is not high in many parts of the highlands.
Underwear and socks
✅ Several pairs of underwear
✅ Socks: Bring several pairs of wool socks or thick socks. You can change them if they get wet. Staying warm is very important!
👟 Shoes Section
Essential
✅ Non-slip athletic shoes
✅ Hiking boots/trekking shoes (highly recommended for climbing Old Man Peak, Querrey's Mountain, etc.!): Shoes need to be non-slip, waterproof, and comfortable; high-tops provide better ankle protection.
Optional
✅ Slippers
Many bed and breakfasts in the UK do not provide disposable slippers.
🧥 Weather Gear
✅ Folding Umbrella
✅ Insulated Water Bottle
✅ Sunscreen
✅ Sunglasses
✅ Sun Hat
Don't be fooled by cloudy skies; the ultraviolet radiation in Scotland is very strong in summer, especially outdoors, where the UV rays are reflected very strongly!
📷 Photography Equipment
✅ Mobile Phone
✅ Camera
✅ Tripod
✅ Spare Battery
✅ Charger
✅ Memory Card
Skye Island, Glencoe Valley, the Three Sisters Mountains, and Cape Nisteria Lighthouse are all very power-intensive photography locations.
🔌 Essential UK Electrical Appliances
✅ The UK standard plug is Type G. If you don't have a UK standard plug, please prepare an adapter in advance.
✅ Mobile phone charging cable
✅ Camera charger
✅ Power bank
💊 Essential Medications
✅ Cold Medicine
✅ Gastrointestinal Medicine
✅ Motion Sickness Medicine
✅ Pain Relief Medicine
✅ Band-Aids
✅ Prescription Medications
Highland Midges
These small flying insects do not transmit diseases, but their numbers are astounding, especially near lakes, in forests, and on windless days.
Recommended to bring:
✅ Insect Repellent Liquid
✅ Insect Spray
✅ Long-sleeved Jacket
📄 Documents
✅ Passport
✅ Flight Ticket Information
✅ Bank Cards and Credit Cards
It is recommended to prepare both electronic and paper copies.
🧴 Daily Necessities
Toiletries
✅ Toothbrush & Toothpaste
✅ Facial Cleanser
✅ Skincare Products
✅ Cosmetics
✅ Comb
✅ Razor
✅ Lip Balm
Some hotels and guesthouses in the UK do not provide disposable toiletries such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, so it's advisable to bring your own. Although the weather in Scotland is cool, UV rays are still present, and the wind can easily dry out the skin; therefore, it's recommended to bring moisturizing skincare products.
Personal Care
✅ Tissues
✅ Wet wipes
✅ Feminine hygiene products
✅ Contact lenses and solution
✅ Glasses (it is recommended to have a spare pair)
In short, you don't need heavy winter clothes in Scotland during the summer, but you must prepare windproof, rainproof, and hiking gear. Whether chasing clouds in Glencoe or embracing the sea breeze on the Isle of Skye, a waterproof jacket and a pair of comfortable shoes are often more important than anything else.
